Research Interests

I'm interested in sound patterns: how they are structured in languages, how they change over time, and how they vary socially and contextually. I approach these questions with a variety of perspectives, which draws insights from formal (generative) theory, contact linguistics, and variationist and historical sociolinguistics. I have a background in comparative Germanic linguistics, and my primary focus is on the Nordic languages, particularly Norwegian, both in Europe and in the United States. My work with heritage language speakers in the American Upper Midwest has greatly shaped how I think about language and community, and bi/multilingualism has become a core focus of my research agenda.
